Description
AMBERT (Joachim). Historical Sketches of the Various Corps Making Up the French Army, Illustrated by Charles Aubert, Professor of Painting at the Royal Cavalry School and author of *Equitation pittoresque*. Sl [Saumur], A. Degouy, n.d. (1835).
Folio, [4]–7 pp. of text in two columns (engraved title page, preliminaries), followed by mixed pagination, with 16 lithographed plates as inserts; a copy in which the large central illustration on the plates has been carefully hand-coloured (the subjects surrounding it in the margins remaining in black), green half-maroquin with corners, smooth spine decorated with two large romantic horseshoes (binding slightly later). Waterstains and paper occasionally browned.
A rare complete copy containing all instalments and featuring the plates enhanced with gouache: these are based on drawings by Charles Aubry and Karl Loeillot and all include a large lithographed border depicting various military scenes relating to the text. The author of the illustrations, the future General Joachim Ambert (whose full name was Marie-Jean-Jacques-Jules, 1804–1890), was the son of Imperial General Jean-Jacques Ambert (1766–1852), and was then serving as a training lieutenant at the Saumur Cavalry School.
(Details of instalments available on request.) (Colas I, 106.) A fine copy.
