[AUBRY (Charles)]. Collection of French Army Uniforms Presented to the King by His Excellency the Marshal, Duke of Bellune, Minister of War. Paris, Picquet, 1823. Folio (545 x 425 mm), 30 plates, speckled half-basane with corner caps, spine with gilt faux-ribbing, red and black title labels, brown label with a gilt crowned monogram, modern violet half-velour slipcase with wide flaps (contemporary binding). First edition of this superb series of 30 lithographed and coloured plates depicting military uniforms, produced to mark the Spanish expedition. The plates were printed by Charles Motte after compositions by Charles Aubry. “This well-drawn and carefully coloured series is extremely interesting” (Glasser). It surveys the uniforms of the Royal Guard (grenadiers, voltigeurs, centre soldiers, cuirassiers, dragoons, chasseurs, lancers, hussars, artillery, elite gendarmes and Swiss infantry), the line and light infantry regiments, Monsieur’s carabiniers, cuirassiers, dragoons, chasseurs, hussars, artillery, pontooners, engineering regiments and squadrons of the military transport train. Skillfully restored binding; front endpaper missing; a few pinholes and rare signs of handling; serpentine binding on the last three plates. A fine copy in a contemporary binding bearing the crowned letter ‘G’. (Glasser, 16).
