Description
[BERKA (Johann)]. The French Army, illustrated in 18 plates. Die französische Armee, dargestellt in 18 Blättern. Prague, Franz Zimmer, undated (1812). Small quarto, sea-green Bradel-style cardboard binding, title in a cartouche pasted onto the front cover (contemporary binding). Spine and part of the covers discoloured; plates 8 and 14 slightly shorter at the bottom. A very rare series comprising a black-and-white title page and 18 plates, watercoloured in the period, depicting uniforms of the Napoleonic army, all engraved in intaglio by the Czech artist Johann Berka (1758–c. 1820). Colas notes that this ‘set [is] exceedingly rare’. (Colas, no. 303; Glasser, 61–62.)
