BLANC (Jules). [Manuscript]. Portable Firearms as Weapons of War. Unpublished manuscript. Text and drawings by Jules Blanc, 26 rue des Petits-Hôtels, Paris. Paris, 1863. Folio manuscript comprising (1) dedication leaf, (98) folios, 30 numbered plates outside the text and numerous figures within the text, text set within a border, red shagreen, ornamented ribbed spine, double border of gilt fillets and frieze on the covers, dedication inscribed in gilt letters on the upper cover, white tabis lining and endpapers, gilt edges (bound by A. Péclet) A fine copy presented to His Excellency Moustapha Kasnadar, Prime Minister to His Royal Highness Bey Sadok of Tunis, with its handwritten dedication page and the author’s tribute inscribed in gold lettering on the upper cover. Mustapha Khaznadar (1817–1878) served as Minister of Finance and Grand Vizier of Tunis between 1837 and 1873. A manuscript described as ‘unpublished’ according to the wording on the title page, produced in Paris on 2 November 1863, remarkably illustrated in pen with 30 numbered plates outside the text and numerous figures within the text by its author Jules Blanc, ‘Supplier to the Ministry of War, Captain-Commander of the National Guard, Vice-President of the Turgot Municipal School, Member of several learned societies, Officer of the Imperial Order of St Stanislas, Officer of the Royal Order of Wasa, Knight of the Military Order of St Olaf, Head of the Royal Order of Merit, etc.” A rare catalogue of portable firearms used as weapons of war in 1863. Traces of water damage on the endpapers. A second handwritten copy dated 1865 is held at the National Library of Portugal under reference number 13279 (Catálogo da colecção de códices: cod. 12888–13292 – page 127 – National Library (Portugal), Teresa A. S. Duarte Ferreira · 1999).
