CLAUSEWITZ (Carl von). *Theory of the Great War*. Translated by Lieutenant-Colonel de Vatry. Paris, Librairie militaire Baudouin, 1886. 2 vols. (of 3) in-8, burgundy half-calf, decorated ribbed spine, title and volume number in gold (contemporary binding). Spine slightly sun-faded. First edition of the French translation. Incomplete, missing the third and final volume. The Prussian general Carl von Clausewitz (1780–1831) took part in the campaigns of 1812, 1813, 1814 and 1815, and also headed the General War College from 1818 to 1830.
