Description
FOSSÉ (Charles Louis de). A Soldier’s Ideas on the Deployment of Troops Entrusted to Young Officers in the Defence and Attack of Small Outposts. Paris, Jombert, 1783. Large quarto, marbled sheepskin, embossed spine, red title label (contemporary binding). Signs of wear and restoration. First edition dedicated to the Duke of Chatelet, whose coat of arms is engraved at the head of the dedication and coloured. The text is the work of the French military engineer Charles-Louis de Fossé. It is divided into two parts: The first deals with the strategies to be employed when attacking (or defending) a small military outpost comprising between 30 and 300 men, and the second with the correct use of colour when drawing military maps and plans. It is illustrated with 11 fold-out plates, very finely coloured by Louis Marin Bonnet, the first engraver of his kind. Marin Bonnet had developed a highly sophisticated technique of engraving in the style of pastel, producing colour prints of the highest quality, and thus paved the way for the great French illustrated works of the late 18th century. A few scattered foxing spots. (Brunet II, 1354.)
