[Crimean War]. From Soissons to Baïdar. [Manuscript], 1858. Handwritten notebook (205 x 165 m) comprising (2)-151-(1) pp., 23 lines per page, table of contents, plain green half-cloth (contemporary binding) Unpublished campaign diary of Private L. Baron, who landed in Kamiesch Bay on 30 September 1855. A valuable handwritten account of the Crimean campaign (1855–1856), combining a travel diary with military memoirs: in which the author describes his journey to Sevastopol, the aftermath of the city’s capture, the daily life of French soldiers, the allied camps, and the landscapes ravaged by war, before recounting the announcement of the 1856 peace treaty and his return to France. The autograph manuscript is titled, signed and dated 11 October 1858, L. Baron. An autograph letter from the same soldier, stationed in Algiers, is enclosed, addressed to his uncle on 3 January 1861 to inform him of his retirement from military service. The cardboard binding is worn. An old stamp on the reverse of the last flyleaf reads ‘Eugène Duval Librairie Rue des Barbiers, 16, Montreuil-sur-Mer’. A previously unpublished account of the final months of the Crimean War, from the capture of Sevastopol to the Treaty of Paris.
