Description
MANESSON MALLET (Alain). *Les Travaux de Mars, ou l'Art de la Guerre*. Divided into three parts. [...] Paris, Denys Thierry, 1685 [1684]–1684.
3 vols. in-8, brown grained calfskin, ornately ribbed spine, double gilt fillet framing the covers, speckled edges (contemporary binding). Spine skilfully restored.
A second, substantially expanded edition. This encyclopaedia of 17th-century military art is illustrated with three (identical) frontispiece titles and 415 engraved plates (in the text). It took account of recent publications, such as the treatises by Stevin, Errard and De Ville, as well as the *Fortifications* by the Count of Pagan, whom Manesson Mallet knew personally. Vauban, who had met Manesson Mallet in 1674, owned a copy of this comprehensive work in his library. Pierre Bayle emphasised ‘the usefulness and importance’ of a work held in high regard by the foremost experts in the field.
A very fine copy.
The work transcends the realm of military technique to become a magnificent 17th-century illustrated book in which text and image are intimately intertwined.
