Description
[MANUSCRIPT]. – [DEROUET (François-Joseph)]. Journal of my journey to Hungary. Sl, n.d. (1794–1814). In-12, 125 pp., covered in very fine, regular handwriting, somewhat illegible (approximately 30 lines per page), modest fawn half-basane with worn corners, plain, unmarked spine (contemporary binding). Gems rubbed. The title we have highlighted is the one appearing at the head of the notebook, but it refers only to a small part of the text’s content. In fact, the text covers the entire period from 1792 to 1814 (the latter date, a later addition, marking the award of the Order of Saint Louis on 27–28 June 1814), and touches on a wide range of subjects. Handwritten diary of François-Joseph Derouet (1773–1860), an engineer officer taken prisoner during the siege of Landrecies in 1794. It provides an accurate account of his captivity in Hungary, his transfer through the Netherlands, Germany and Austria, and his subsequent return to France following a prisoner exchange, whilst also offering a detailed account of the siege of Landrecies and the recapture of the town by French forces. (Further details available on request.)
