Description
[PICRO A.]. Military album. , [1890–1895]. In-4 (30.6 x 23.7 cm), frontispiece and 262 uncoloured plates, navy blue percaline, double cold-pressed raised and recessed fillet on the covers, smooth spine with gold fillet simulating raised bands, gilt title, full-length portrait of the author, repairs (contemporary binding). Album comprising a frontispiece and 262 exquisite original watercolours of military uniforms. These are very finely executed and captioned in French. The frontispiece depicts a piece of artillery, two military uniforms and ten standards. It is dated 20 September 1890. The watercolours depict European soldiers with their weapons, sometimes on horseback and occasionally in action. They depict 9 soldiers from Denmark, 13 from Spain, 12 from Sweden, 8 from Norway, 37 from the Kingdom of England (including the British Indian Empire), 44 from Italy (including 17 from the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies), 7 from Switzerland, 30 from Austria, 1 from Monaco, 53 from Germany, 11 from Holland, 14 from Belgium, 6 from Turkey, 5 from Greece, 4 from Romania, 4 from Serbia, 3 from Bulgaria and 1 from Montenegro. The artist remains unknown, except that the spine of the album bears the full name ‘A. Picro’ and that some of the watercolours are signed, corroborating this name. A note found in another album of military costumes sold at Jeschke van Vliet in Berlin in 2021 identifies Picro as a brigadier in the 5th Cuirassier Regiment at Évreux, who enlisted as a volunteer on 24 March 1855. From the collection of the painter, psychologist and colour theorist Hilaire Hiler, author of *Bibliography of Costume*, New York, 1939. With his illustrated bookplate depicting Adam and Eve. A small oval bookplate from the Queens Borough Public Library, founded in 1896, bearing the date of incorporation, 1907. A unique and high-quality collection.
