Description
SUHR (Christian). Collection of various Spanish national costumes and uniforms of the Division of the Marquis de la Romana, garrisoned in Hamburg in 1807 and 1808. Drawn by Prof. Christ. Suhr, etched and engraved by Corn. Suhr. Sl [Hamburg], n.d. (c. 1808).
Folio, title page, and 18 fine plates engraved in aquatint and captioned in German, mounted on tabs, green morocco, spine with decorative raised bands, double frame of triple gilt fillet on the covers with vases in the spandrels, gilt edges (L. Lemardeley). Spine slightly sun-faded.
An exceedingly rare series of plates devoted to the uniforms of the La Romana Division, drawn from life in Hamburg by Christian Suhr. It constitutes one of the very rare contemporary pictorial records of this Spanish corps sent to serve under Napoleon in Germany, prior to the spectacular escape of the majority of its troops to Spain in 1808 under the command of the Marquis of La Romana.
Colas II, 2833. Palau 324 923. Only one copy in the CCF (BnF).
A very fine copy.
