VAN HALEN (Juan). Memoirs of Don Juan Van Halen, Chief of Staff of a division of Mina’s army in 1822 and 1823. Written under the author’s supervision by Ch. Rogier. Brussels, H. Tarlier, 1827. 2 volumes in one in-8 volume of (3) folios, 238–(1) pp. — (2) folios, v-(1 blank page)-310 pp. (incorrectly paginated; the pagination jumps from 304 to 309 with no pages missing); root-stained sheepskin, plain decorated spine, red calfskin title label (contemporary binding). A Brussels counterfeit of the first edition. It is illustrated with two frontispiece portraits, six lithographed facsimile leaves, and a fold-out map of Georgia. Juan Van Halen y Sartí (1788–1864) was a Spanish and Russian officer of Flemish origin. After fighting on the side of the defeated in the Spanish War, he was forced to flee to Spain. Van Halen became a military adventurer across Europe and served for 18 months as a colonel in the Russian Dragoon Regiment of the Caucasus until he was dismissed by Tsar Alexander I of Russia. The first part of his memoirs recounts his captivity in the dungeons of the Spanish Inquisition in 1817 and 1818, as well as his escape. The second part covers his journey to Russia, his campaign in the Caucasus under Yermolov in 1819 and 1820, and his return to Spain. A fine copy. Skillfully restored.
