BARBASETTI (L.). Fencing Through the Centuries and My Method. Second edition. Illustrated with 100 plates. Paris, Librairie italienne, 1928. 8vo, paperback, printed illustrated cover (dated 1931), with an errata sheet pasted to the back cover. At the end of the 19th century, the Italian fencing master Luigi Barbasetti, heir to the teachings of Giuseppe Radaelli, played a decisive role in the spread of modern sabre fencing. Having settled in Vienna in 1894, where he founded the Austro-Hungarian Central Fencing School before teaching at the Military Academy in Wiener Neustadt, he helped to spread the Italian method throughout Europe. His teaching had a lasting influence on the Hungarian school, which refined this technique through more precise use of the fingers and wrist and dominated international sabre competitions for over half a century.
