Description
[BEFFROY DE REIGNY (Louis-Abel, known as ‘Cousin Jacques’)]. *Les Nouvelles Lunes du Cousin Jacques*. Paris: published by the author and by Belin, 1791. 30 instalments bound in one volume, in-12, half-creme calfskin, plain decorated spine, title label in green marbled paper (contemporary binding). Complete collection comprising 30 weekly instalments from 3 January to 25 July 1791 (following the first series published in 36 instalments between June 1785 and May 1787). The first ‘periodical folly’ by the journalist, playwright and poet Beffroy de Reigny (1757–1811), *Les Lunes du Cousin Jacques* is a satirical and humorous publication comprising gossip, literary short stories, poems, rhyming verses, musical pieces and theatrical dialogues – ‘a most curious and amusing hodgepodge of verse and prose on every conceivable and even inconceivable subject. What sets it apart above all is its entirely personal character’ (Hatin). The lunar allegory enabled the author to set his observations on the political and social transformations of his time in a utopian setting. After 1787, the periodical became *Le Courrier des planètes* and then *Les Nouvelles Lunes du Cousin Jacques* during the Revolution. (Hatin, p. 82.)
