CALONNE (Charles-Alexandre de). Petition to the King. Addressed to His Majesty. London, Spilbury, 1787–1788. Quarto, (2)-131-(1)-77-(1) pp., havana calfskin, plain spine decorated with gilt fillets, title label in red morocco (contemporary binding) First edition printed in London. Following the meeting of the Assembly of Notables, Calonne (1734–1802), Comptroller-General of Finances, was dismissed in April 1787 and went into exile in London, where he ‘published, in response to the attacks levelled against him within that assembly and by the public, his famous Petition to the King—so often cited—in which the acts of his administration that had been criticised are highlighted. It sets out, in turn, his justifications regarding the following matters: acquisitions and exchanges of estates granted out of favouritism to the detriment of the Treasury’s interests; abusive and unauthorised extensions of various loans that had already been repaid; illegitimate profits from the remelting of gold coins; interventions in the stock market and funds intended to support speculation, etc. ’ (Stourm).
