Description
[French Constitution]. Collection. 1795–1796. 12 documents bound in 1 volume. In-8, red half-shagreen with corner pieces, decorated ribbed spine, gilt fillets framing the covers, gilt head, untrimmed (bound c. 1850) A valuable collection of printed documents preparatory to the Constitution of Year III, partly annotated by Convention member Daunou, bearing his autograph signature and those of the ten other members of the Constitutional Committee: Baudin des Ardennes, Berlier, Boissy, Creuzé-La-Touche, Durand-Maillane, Lanjuinais, Le Sage d’Eure et Loir, Louvet du Loiret, La Révellière-Lépeaux, Thibaudeau. ‘Before adjourning, the Convention finally resolved to do what it had been elected to do: draft a Constitution – a genuine one, since that of Year I had been little more than a smokescreen intended to appease the provinces’ anger against Paris. From 21 March to 22 August 1795, the Convention, through a constitutional committee dominated by moderates such as Daunou and Boissy d’Anglas, drew up a very lengthy Constitution comprising 377 articles, still preceded by the Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen. ’ (History and Dictionary of the French Revolution, p. 701). (Detailed list of items available on request.) G. Prieur ex-libris stamp.
