In-8, (8)-244-(4) pp., violet half-calf, smooth spine decorated with gilt fillets, crowned initials at the foot (contemporary binding) First edition. A critical work by Cyprien Desmarais, who aims to ‘subject revolutionary ideas and doctrines to the cross-examination of the Enlightenment and the experience of the age in which we live’; his study is based on the accounts of these events by his contemporaries, who ‘almost all hold the same political views’. His aim is therefore not to present a new history of this period, but rather to adopt a new perspective on it. (Tourneux I, 167.) A fine copy despite some foxing.
