HAMEL (Ernest). A Brief History of the French Revolution. Paris, Librairie Pagnerre, 1870. In-8, (4)-IV-559-(1) pp., red half-shagreen, ribbed spine, title label in red morocco (contemporary binding). Ernest Hamel (1826–1898) espoused republican and democratic ideas and expressed his sympathy for the revolutionaries. He came up against the censorship of Napoleon III’s government, which ordered his *Histoire de Saint-Just* (1859) to be pulped and threatened to prosecute him over his *Histoire de Robespierre* (1865).
