Description
[LEGRAS (Philippe)]. *Le Citoyen françois, ou Mémoires historiques, politiques, physiques, etc.* London, 1785. In-8, viii–260 pp., fawn half-basane, smooth spine decorated with scrolls and gilt motifs, title page, speckled endpapers (contemporary binding). Minor worm damage to the spine, a few foxing spots and water stains. First edition of this work written by Philippe Legras, a lawyer at the Council of State and former prosecutor at the Parliament of Dijon. (Quérard, 110.) Followed by: *Les Vœux d’un patriote*. Amsterdam, 1788, XIV–282 pp. A new edition of *Soupirs de la France esclave qui aspire après la liberté* (Amsterdam, 1689). A collection of fifteen treatises compiled by Pierre Jurieu in defence of persecuted Protestants, this work attracted close scrutiny under Louis XIV, who ordered the destruction of most copies brought into France. Having become extremely rare by the 18th century, it was republished on the eve of the Revolution.
