Description
Lyon – GUILLON DE MONTLEON (Aimé). Memoirs on the History of the City of Lyon during the Revolution. Paris, Baudouin frères [Printed by J. Tastu], later Gauthier frères, 1824.
3 vols. in-8, plum-coloured half-calf with corners, decorated ribbed spine, double gilt line on the covers (contemporary binding). Clumsy repairs to the joints, rubbed spine, damaged corners, foxing. (Collection of memoirs relating to the French Revolution).
A very complete copy of the third volume, which is rare.
This is a new, extensively expanded edition of *The History of the Siege of Lyon, the Events that Preceded It and the Disasters that Followed, Together with Their Secret, General and Specific Causes (from 1789 to 1796)*. Accompanied by a map showing the main engagements, the combatants’ batteries, the places set alight and the buildings demolished, published in two volumes in 1797.
This copy is enriched with 35 engravings and 17 manuscripts.
Fierro, 684. Martin & Walter, 16 114.
Given the first manuscript piece included in the work and the nature of the others, it is likely that this copy belonged to the bookseller Ambroise Dupont (1793–1840). Active in Paris from 1824, he was granted a bookseller’s licence there on 1 February 1825, replacing Achille Lheureux, who stepped down in his favour. It was in that same year, 1825, that he launched, together with J.-P. Roret, a series of editions of the classics in small volumes.
