Description
[MANUSCRIPT]. – FAUCHER (César and Constantin). [Correspondence with Laffon de Ladébat]. Sl [La Réole or Bordeaux], 5 April 1791 – 10 Ventôse, Year VI [28 February 1798]. 90 items in-4 or folio, in loose sheets. Correspondence comprising letters written by the two ‘Twins of La Réole’, the brothers César and Constantin Faucher (1760–1815), to their friend André-Daniel Laffon de Ladébat (1746–1829), who from 1791 served as a Feuillant deputy for the Gironde in the Legislative Assembly. An exceptional collection of political correspondence between the key figures of the Revolution in the Gironde between 1791 and 1793. Blending local affairs with debates in the Legislative Assembly, these letters provide day-to-day commentary on the major events of the Revolution – the death of Mirabeau, the religious crisis, preparations for war, the fall of the monarchy, the September Massacres, and the elections to the Convention – whilst shedding light on the administration of La Réole and the political tensions within the department. They constitute a first-rate account of the early days of the Revolution as seen from the Gironde. (Details available on request.)
