Description
MORETON-CHABRILLAN (Jacques-Henri de). Petition submitted to the National Assembly by J.H. Moreton, protesting his arbitrary dismissal from the post of Colonel of the La Fère Infantry Regiment. Paris, Imprimerie Nationale, 1790. 8vo, paperback, (4)-96 pp. General Jacques-Henri de Moreton-Chabrillan (1752–1793) took part in the American War of Independence and the Siege of Gibraltar (1783), and was appointed in 1785 colonel of an infantry regiment. One day, whilst at the theatre, he sought to have a prosecutor sitting next to him removed; he seized him by the hair and had him thrown out by soldiers. This act of brutal violence was reported to Parliament by the victim, and the Minister of War stripped Moreton of his rank of colonel. Moreton had tried in vain to have this decision overturned when the Revolution broke out; he declared himself in favour of the new ideas, harangued the crowd at the Palais-Royal, became a member of the Jacobin Club, and was appointed field marshal in 1791. He was then given a command in Dumouriez’s army, organised a Sans-culottes club in Brussels, and subsequently moved to Douai as commander of the garrison, where he died. His brutality and violent temperament had earned him a great many enemies.
