Description
PHELIPPES, known as TRONJOLLY. Drownings, Shootings, or A Response to the Report by Carrier, Representative of the People, on the Crimes and Misappropriation of Funds by the Revolutionary Committee of Nantes, the trial for which is due to begin on 15 Vendémiaire at the Revolutionary Tribunal in Paris. Available in Paris, from Ballard, Printer, Rue des Mathurins, 1794. In-8 (14.5 x 21.5 cm), comprising 1 title page, 106 pp., 11 plates. Green shagreen, gilt headband, Du Seuil-style decoration, spine decorated with five raised bands, inner roulette (19th-century binding). A collection of documents relating to the proceedings concerning the drownings in Nantes and the charges against Jean-Baptiste Carrier. The author was a judge at the Revolutionary Tribunal during the Reign of Terror, and former President of the Criminal and Revolutionary Tribunals of the Department of the Lower Loire, in Nantes; he was tried in Paris during the trial of the Nantes Revolutionary Committee and acquitted. This copy is enriched with eleven plates. Some minor paper repairs in the margins, without affecting the text. Luxuriously bound. On the first blank page is written in pencil the name of Mélanie Waldor, née Villenave, a woman of letters born in Nantes in 1796.
