PUISAYE (J. de). Memoirs which may be of use to the history of the French Royalist Party during the last revolution. London, 1803–1825. 7 vols. in-8 (vol. 6 in 2 parts with continuous pagination), red long-grain half-maroquin with corner pieces, decorated ribbed spine, gilt head (bound c. 1830). Water-stains. Partly original edition of the utmost rarity. Copy conforming to that described by Lemière. "A deputy for the nobility of the Perche in the Estates-General, Puisaye led the Eure departmental army, a federalist force in revolt against the Convention in 1793. Defeated, he took refuge in Brittany and organised the Chouannerie around Rennes. In London in 1794, he was the instigator of the Quiberon expedition. His eagerness to flee the massacre and take refuge on a British ship did him a great disservice. Now out of favour with the royalists and facing the hostility of Louis XVIII, his role was over. “His memoirs are not always entirely accurate, and he tends to exaggerate his role” (Fierro). “Unreliable, they shed light above all on the rivalries within Louis XVIII’s entourage” (Tulard).
