Van Hook, 1798. 4 parts in 2 vols., in-8, 202–164 and 202–235 pp., half havana sheepskin (modern binding) First American edition, published three years after the original French version, of Madame Roland’s memoirs. Jeanne-Marie Roland de La Platière (1754–1793), wife of the minister Jean-Marie Roland, was one of the leading Girondin figures of the Revolution. As the hostess of an influential political salon, she played an active role in drafting many of her husband’s writings before being guillotined in 1793. Her Memoirs, written whilst in prison, constitute an essential account of the French Revolution.
