Description
ROMAIN (Félix de). Memoirs of a Royalist Officer, recounting his entry into service, his travels in Corsica and Italy, his emigration, his campaigns with the Army of Condé, and the campaign of 1815 in the Vendée. Paris, A. Égron, 1824–1829.
4 volumes bound together as 3 in-8 volumes, in green half-basane, with a plain, decorated spine (contemporary binding).
First edition. Volume two consists of two parts bound together in a single volume.
[Included, bound after volume 3, and by the same author:]
- An account of certain events concerning the War in the Vendée, relating solely to the inhabitants of Anjou who took part in the two main phases of this memorable war. Paris, A. Pihan Delaforest, undated.
- Appendix to the Memoirs of a Royalist Officer. Angers, Georges Pignet, 1849.
Having joined the army in 1780 at the age of 14, the author set off with his regiment for Corsica in 1787, where he came into contact with – and did not particularly care for – a young officer named Bonaparte. In 1788, he travelled to Italy and then returned to Corsica, where he witnessed the outbreak of the Revolution. In 1791, he went into exile and joined Condé’s army.
A rare copy with both additional texts. The headbands and corners are slightly rubbed.
