Description
SEGUIER (Antoine-Louis). Letter from an English Merchant to a French Merchant, on the Advantages or Disadvantages of the New Constitution Granted to France. Paris: Senneville, 1791. In-8, 124 pp., modern cardboard binding, title label on the spine. First edition. A political, anti-revolutionary and pro-monarchist treatise by Chancellor Séguier (1726–1792), who condemns the egalitarian system, the abolition of the old taxes and their replacement by ruinous stamp duties, registration fees and licence fees, the issue of paper money and the establishment of national guards a hundred times more costly than the old militia; finally, the new regime will, amongst other drawbacks, be detrimental to trade and the colonies.
