Description
CHATEAUBRIAND (François René, Viscount of). Report on the State of France, presented to the King in his Council by the Viscount of Chateaubriand, Minister Plenipotentiary of His Most Christian Majesty to the Court of Sweden. Ghent, Royal Printing Office, 1815. In-8, (2)-62 pp., blue half-basane, plain decorated spine, marbled edges (contemporary binding) First edition. A scathing pamphlet against Napoleon, first published in the *Moniteur de Gand* on 12 May. In it, Chateaubriand paints a very bleak picture of Bonaparte’s France and sets out his highly liberal political views aimed at ‘avoiding the excesses’ of the tyrant. Bound together: - CHATEAUBRIAND (François René, Viscount of), Political Reflections on Certain Contemporary Writings and on the Interests of All the French People. Paris, Le Normant, 1814. Carnot had published a ‘Memoir to the King’ critical of the new monarchy. Chateaubriand seized upon the occasion of this publication to launch his ‘Reflections’, whilst condemning the audacity of this regicide. - CHATEAUBRIAND (François René, Viscount de), Proposal made to the Chamber of Peers, at the sitting of 23 November last, urging that the King be humbly entreated to have the events of the recent elections investigated, so that he may subsequently rule upon them according to his justice. Followed by the supporting documents referred to in the Proposal. Paris, J. G. Dentu, 1816. 8vo, 88 pp. Second edition. Some foxing; traces of water damage on the last two leaves. - FITZ-JAMES (Édouard, Duke of), Chamber of Peers. Opinion of His Grace the Duke of Fitz-James on the bill relating to the suppression of offences committed through the press, or by any other means of publication. Paris, Printed by P. Didot the Elder, undated (1817). 8vo, 46 pp. Title page missing. - RUBICHON (Maurice), On the Role of the Clergy in Modern Societies, by Mr Rubichon.
