Egypt – [MANUSCRIPT]. Journal of the voyages and campaigns of 1792, years 93, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th and 9th of the French Republic. By A. Martin, officer in the 9th Line Demi-Brigade, formerly the 1st Infantry Regiment. Unsigned, undated (1803). In-8, 179 folios, partially numbered, filled with medium-sized, neat and very legible handwriting (approximately 25 lines per page), with a full-page watercolour illustration (the compass), leaf 9 is missing; stiff vellum with a lower flap, smooth spine (contemporary binding). Leather missing from the lower cap; copy is unbound. Exceptional unpublished memoirs by André Martin, a non-commissioned officer and later an officer in the infantry, recounting his campaigns from the Revolution of 1792 to 1802, with particular emphasis on the Egyptian expedition. Following the campaigns in the Netherlands, Germany and Italy, the author provides a particularly detailed account of the conquest of Egypt and the Syrian campaign: the battles of Chebreis, the Pyramids and Aboukir, the siege of Saint-Jean-d’Acre, the assassination of Kléber, and the evacuation of the French army, enriched with numerous observations on the country’s monuments, people and customs. A second draft, bound as a separate second volume, more fully developed and presumably intended for publication, extends these memoirs to cover the campaigns of 1805–1809, making this collection a first-rate account of the Revolutionary Wars and the early years of the Napoleonic era.
