Description
LARREY (Dominique-Jean). Memoirs of Military Surgery and Campaigns. Paris, Smith and Buisson, 1812–1817. 4 vols. in-8, 17 plates, frontispiece portrait in vol. 1, black half-basane, plain spine with longitudinal decoration, black moiré covers, gilt scrolls framing the title (contemporary binding). Spine slightly rubbed, edges worn. Mild foxing and marginal water stains. A first edition of great rarity. Dominique-Jean Larrey [1766–1842] was one of the greatest surgeons of the Napoleonic era. He was one of the first to perform an amputation at the hip joint, the first to describe the therapeutic effect of fly larvae; he provided the first description of ‘trench foot’ and established mobile field hospitals and forward aid stations. The American campaign is covered on pp. 1–48 of Volume 1; the Corsican campaigns on pp. 79–120; the Egyptian and Syrian campaigns on pp. 181–375, and pp. 1–310 of Volume 2. The campaigns of Boulogne, Ulm and Austerlitz cover pages 311 to 450 of Volume 2; the Russian campaign covers pages 1 to 283 of Volume 4. A handwritten note at the top states: ‘A fifth volume is in press; when it is completed, it will be sent to the same address’ (the page has been cut out). At the bottom are two signatures, including that of Larrey. De Meulenaere 129. Welcome III, 451. Garrison Morton 2160. Tulard 849: “…of real importance, not only medically but also militarily. In it, he explains how he conceived of military surgery in France and the organisation he established for it…”
