Description
[MANUSCRIPT] – PONS DE L’HERAULT (André). Memoir for Emperor Napoleon, addressed to the sovereigns assembled at the Congress of Aachen by Pons de l’Hérault, Prefect of the Rhône department, during the Hundred Days. n.p., n.d. (1818).
2 folio volumes, 100 pp.; [21] ff. [Notes and recollections], all written in a medium-sized, legible hand (approximately 30 lines per page), with numerous erasures and crossings-out, bound in slightly worn temporary covers.
An exceptional unpublished manuscript by Pons de l’Hérault (1772–1853), a memoirist from Elba, written in 1818 on the occasion of the Congress of Aachen. In this impassioned plea for a relaxation of Napoleon’s confinement on St Helena, the author interweaves personal recollections, a defence of the Emperor, reflections on the Empire’s glory days and constant criticism of England. The second volume brings together notes and anecdotes, largely devoted to the Hundred Days, which have also remained entirely unpublished. (Details available on request.)
