Description
[MANUSCRIPT – TOULON HEADQUARTERS]. An unfortunate incident involving Mr Roux senior, a naval commissioner, and his eldest son upon the French army’s entry into Toulon on 30 Frimaire, Year II of the Republic, corresponding to 20 December 1793. A true account written by himself. Unsigned, undated (c. 1801). Small quarto, [15] folios, covered in medium-sized, careful and very legible handwriting (approximately 20 lines per page), text ruled in pencil, in loose sheets, sewn. An extraordinary handwritten account by a survivor of a firing squad, who witnessed the massacres that followed the recapture of Toulon from the British in December 1793. Arrested along with his son, the author claims to have survived the executions at the Champ-de-Mars by feigning death despite the coup de grâce, before escaping. Blending personal memories with details of the revolutionary repression, this account—as gripping as it is controversial—constitutes a rare first-hand account of these events.
