[MANUSCRIPT]. – BERTRAND (Henri-Gatien). [Set of 4 B.A.S. to Louis-Étienne Saint-Denis]. Paris and Châteauroux, 18 April 1841 – 17 June 1842. 4 items, in-8, loose sheets. An interesting collection of short letters providing a detailed account of the enduring relationship between former exiles from St Helena, despite the vast social gulf between Marshal Bertrand (1773–1844) and his former servant, Saint-Denis (1788–1856). They date from the period between Bertrand’s return from his first stay in Martinique (1837–1840) and his second (late 1842 – late 1843). (Detailed list available on request.) Enclosed is the draft of Saint-Denis’s reply to the second of these notes, which is the most significant for the history of Saint Helena.
