Description
[MANUSCRIPT]. – [DU BOURG-COURCHAMPS (Jean-Joseph-Maurice)]. [Memoirs]. no place, no date (1847).
Large folio (37 x 24 cm), 52 pp., [2] ff., written in medium-sized, legible hand (approximately 30–35 lines per page), with erasures and crossings-out, in loose sheets, sewn.
Unpublished memoirs of Jean-Joseph-Maurice Du Bourg de Courchamps (1776–1861), an officer in the Royal Engineers, devoted chiefly to the Spanish War (1808–1809). A witness to the events of the Dos de Mayo, a participant in the second siege of Zaragoza and aide-de-camp to General Belliard, he provides a detailed account of the military operations and his experiences of Spain and its people, before explaining the political and family reasons that led him to leave Napoleon’s service and retire to civilian life.
