Description
ROGUET (General). Military Memoirs of Lieutenant-General Count Roguet (François), Second Colonel of the Foot Grenadiers of the Old Guard, Peer of France. Paris, Dumaine, 1862–1865. 4 vols. in-8, half-basane, decorated ribbed spine, covers preserved (contemporary binding) Tulard, 1271: ‘The Consular period is covered from Volume II onwards, beginning with the Italian campaign of 1800. In this volume, of particular note is garrison life in Paris from 1801 to 1803 (a ball at Moreau’s, the establishment of a library, the municipal guard, pay, and drills). Volume III covers the formation of the Grande Armée and the campaigns of 1805–1809. Volume IV recounts the fall of the Empire. Few stylistic flourishes; a precise, unadorned account of events.” “Roguet began his military career in 1792 in Nice, took part in 1793 in the operations of the Army of the Var and the siege of Toulon, then, from 1794 onwards, in the war in Italy” (Fierro, 1279). A fine copy of these excellent memoirs. Spine faded.
