BUCHON (Jean Alexandre). A Collection of French National Chronicles, written in the vernacular from the thirteenth to the sixteenth century; with notes and explanations. Paris, Verdière, 1824–1829. 47 bound volumes in 48 in-8 volumes, in royal blue half-calf, with ornate ribbed spines (binding by Ginain). A rare collection of this series of chronicles, each more significant than the last, several of which had not yet been printed, and which deserves a place in major libraries. It is divided into three parts. First series – 13th century: Volumes 1 and 2. History of the Empire of Constantinople under the Frankish Emperors, up to the conquest by the Turks, by Dufresne du Cange, a new edition entirely revised on the basis of the manuscripts. Volume 3. Chronicle of the capture of Constantinople by the Franks, written by Geoffroy de Ville-Hardouin, followed by a continuation by Henri de Valencienne, and several passages in prose and verse relating to the French occupation of the Greek Empire in the 13th century. Volume 4. Chronicle of the conquest of Constantinople and the settlement of the French in Morea, written in political verse by an anonymous author in the early years of the 14th century, and translated for the first time from the unpublished Greek manuscript. Volumes 5 & 6. The Chronicle of Romon Muntaner, translated for the first time from Catalan, with notes and explanations. This is followed by the account of Jean Prochyta’s conspiracy. Volumes 7 & 8. *Branche des Royaux lignages*, a metrical chronicle by Guillaume Guiart, published for the first time, based on manuscripts from the King’s library. 2nd series – 14th century Volume 9. A metrical chronicle by Godefroy de Paris, followed by the ‘taille de Paris’ of 1313, published for the first time, based on manuscripts from the King’s library. Volumes 10 to 24. The chronicles of Jean Froissart. The final volume contains three supplements: 1) Account of the embassy of Migon de Rochefort… to Huguès IV, Judge of Arborea, in 1378, followed by the constitution of the Duchy of Arborea, or Curta de Logu. 2) Chronicle of Richard II, from 1377 to 1399. 3) Memoirs of Pierre de Salmon, presented to Charles VI. Volume 25. Poems by Froissart, extracted from two manuscripts in the King’s Library, and published for the first time, together with a biography of Froissart by de la Curne de Sainte-Palaye. 3rd series – 15th century Volumes 26 to 40. Monstrelet’s Chronicles and their continuation. At the beginning of the first volume is a treatise on the life and chronicles of this author by M. Dacier. As for the text, Buchon followed the manuscripts in the King’s Library, which are far superior to the printed editions, the latter being inaccurate and incomplete. He also made use of a notebook of corrections left by Du Cange; and as the fourth book of Monstrelet, which forms part of the older editions, is merely a compilation drawn from various chroniclers, the editor has replaced this book with the complete texts of those same authors. Volume 41. Chronicle of Jacques de Lalain, by Georges Chastellain. Volumes 42 & 43. Chronicle of the Dukes of Burgundy, by the same author, published for the first time. Volumes 43bis to 47. Chronicles of Jean Molinet, published for the first time. A very fine copy, printed entirely on vellum paper and free from foxing.
