Description
[The Dreyfus Affair]. [Zola. 32 caricatures by Lebourgeois.] [Paris], [E. Bernard et Cie], [1898]. Set of 32 plates (2 series) in folio, large 8vo format, without the title page. A few foxing spots. A collection containing all the caricatures in a watercolour-style technique, satirising Zola’s work from an anti-Dreyfusard, even anti-Semitic, perspective. Lebourgeois’s drawings were published in late July 1898; Zola was depicted in wildly comical situations, relating to the titles of his works: *L’Assommoir* (a labourer vomiting on the corner of a wall on the Avenue de la Grande Armée); *Pot-bouille* (Zola seduces a cook); *L’Argent* (Zola bows before a pot-bellied financier, a graduate of the École Polytechnique); *La Débâcle* (Zola, dressed as an Italian, flees Paris, running towards Bordeaux); *La Curée* (Zola eats a plate of butter alongside a pig and a dog); *Germinal* (Zola gazes at a woman showing her backside to a soldier); *Le Rêve* (Zola as an academician); *La Confession de Claude* (Zola, as a fairground entertainer, beats a drum inscribed with the words ‘J’Accuse’)… To conclude, Lebourgeois portrays the novelist as a madman: Rochefort and Drumont accompany Zola, clad in a straitjacket, to the gates of the Sainte-Anne psychiatric hospital.
