North America – ADAMS (John). A Defence of the American Constitutions, or of the Necessity of a Balance of Powers in a Free Government. Paris, Buisson, 1792. 2 vols., in-8, comprising (2) folios, xxiv–547 pp. & (2) ff., 503 pp.; green half-basane, plain spine with decoration (later binding). First French edition, published and annotated by Jacques-Vincent Delacroix and translated by D. Leriguet. John Adams was the second President of the United States, serving from 1797 to 1801, having previously served as George Washington’s Vice-President for eight years. In this work, published in London in 1787, he defends the American Constitution, of which he was one of the drafters. This constitution is characterised by a bicameral system (House of Representatives and Senate) as well as by the separation of the three powers (legislative, executive and judicial), conceived as three branches independent of one another. A good copy. A few pinholes.
