BAYLE (Pierre). Historical and Critical Dictionary. Fourth edition, revised, corrected and expanded to include the author’s biography by Mr des Maizeaux. Amsterdam, Brunel, Wetstein & Smith, Waesberge, Humbert, Honoré, Chatelain and Mortier; Leiden, Luchtmans, 1730. 4 vols. folio, brown calfskin, decorated ribbed spine, title and volume number labels, red edges (contemporary binding). Frontispiece portrait of the author, 4 title vignettes, vignette at the head of the dedication page. Heavy wear to the leather, caps and corners heavily worn with leather missing in places, split joints, some leaves browned. This dictionary foreshadows the Encyclopédie with its interwoven texts, its scepticism and its libertarian writings. Because of this, Pierre Bayle (1647–1706) spent a good part of his life in Holland. A copy belonging to the famous naturalist Georges-Louis Leclerc de Buffon (1707–1788), bearing his handwritten bookplate, ‘Buffon 1750’, on the title page.
