Description
BEAUMARCHAIS (Pierre-Augustin Caron de). Memorandum by Pierre-Augustin Caron de Beaumarchais; in response to the defamatory libel signed by Guillaume Kornman; accompanied by a complaint for defamation, submitted with a petition to the Lieutenant-Criminal, and a request for authorisation to bring charges. A counter-memorandum refuting the allegations against Pierre-Augustin Caron de Beaumarchais, to follow on from the public proclamation. Defence by Pierre-Augustin Caron de Beaumarchais. By the Friend of Innocence. Letter from Mr Morande, author and editor of *Le Courrier de l’Europe*, to Mr de Beaumarchais. London, 6 July 1787; Memorandum presented to the King by Mr Le Noir, Councillor of State. Paris, [1781–1787]. 8vo, paperback, 62–52–23–13–32 pp. Deceived by his wife, the Strasbourg banker Korman succeeded in having her committed to an asylum; the lover was a certain Daudet de Jossan, a trusted aide to the powerful Minister of War, Mr de Montbarey. Beaumarchais came to the defence of the mistreated wife. But the affair took a more political turn when Korman had the opportunity to befriend the young lawyer Nicolas Bergasse, known for the extreme fervour he had displayed in pamphlets in support of Mesmer’s magnetic experiments. The substance of the case soon faded from Bergasse’s memoirs; there was hardly any mention any more of Mr and Mrs Kornman, but rather of the exile of Parliament and the villainy of Beaumarchais, whom he accused of having sold out to the ministers.
