Description
Belgium – [MANUSCRIPT] – GODEFROY (Denis-Joseph). Chronological table of all the placards, edicts and ordinances contained in the collections of placards from Brabant and Flanders. By Mr Godefroy, Keeper of the Archives of the former Counts of Flanders in Lille, of the Academy of Besançon. Sl, 1787.
A substantial folio volume, [8] leaves (title page, one blank leaf, table, one blank leaf), 631 pp., written in medium-sized, very legible and spacious hand (approximately 35 lines per page), a few erasures, 8 blank leaves blank leaves, [48] ff., marbled fawn sheepskin, ribbed spine, title page, red edges (contemporary binding). Upper joint completely split, cap ends trimmed.
A very important original manuscript of one of the diplomatic works by the archivist Denis-Joseph Godefroy (1740–1816), a direct descendant of the famous French historiographer Denys Godefroy (1615–1681), through his son Jean Godefroy (1656–1732) and his grandson Jean-Baptiste-Achille Godefroy (1697–1759). The last in a line of archivists at the Lille Chamber of Accounts, Godefroy devoted his career to organising and cataloguing the extensive royal archives of the former French Netherlands. This manuscript compiles a catalogue of the ‘placards’ of Brabant and Flanders (1171–1768), bearing witness to the significant diplomatic and archival work he undertook on collections that are now partly lost or scattered.
The name ‘Godefroy’ is written in gold lettering in the centre of the upper cover, with the letter ‘G’ repeated in the panels on the spine. This is therefore most likely the author’s own copy.
Heraldic ex-libris vignettes of two Flemish scholars: Denis Du Péage and Anatole de Norguet (1823–1898).
