BOLINGBROKE (Henry St. John). Letters on the Spirit of Patriotism, on the Idea of a Patriotic King, and on the State of the Parties which Divided England at the Accession of George I. Translated from the English. London, 1750. In-8, (4)-VII-255 pp., havana calf, decorated ribbed spine, red edges (contemporary binding) First French edition, translated by Claude de Thyard de Bissy. The original edition was published in 1749; it was the last work to appear during the author’s lifetime, as he died in 1751 at the age of seventy-three. Henry Saint-John, Viscount Bolingbroke, the British Foreign Secretary, negotiated the Treaty of Utrecht in 1713. As a counterpoint to his political career, he composed a philosophical work whose cynicism and deism inspired Pope and Voltaire. Spine restored.
