Description
[BOUHOURS (Dominique)]. The History of Pierre d’Aubusson, Grand Master of Rhodes. Paris, Sébastien Mabre-Cramoisy, 1677. In-12, havana calfskin, decorated ribbed spine (contemporary binding). A rare second edition, published one year after the first edition in quarto format. It is illustrated with a full-page engraved map of Rhodes within the text (p. 144). At the age of sixteen, Bouhours entered the Society of Jesus, of which he was one of the most distinguished members. He was the author of numerous works on history and rhetoric, including one on Pierre d’Aubusson. The latter was the 40th Grand Master of the Order of St John of Jerusalem, a cardinal and papal legate to Asia. He was nicknamed ‘the shield of Christendom’ due to his victorious resistance to the siege of Rhodes in 1480 by a large Ottoman fleet. A fine copy. An engraved bookplate bearing the coat of arms of the Maridor family is pasted onto the title page.
