[Council of Luxembourg]. Political and administrative affairs. Edict of 11 September 1532. [Manuscript]. , [c. 1560]. Quarto manuscript (17 x 23 cm) with 30 lines per page, comprising (21) folios, in a grey-blue cardboard binding with a plain ribbed spine (19th-century binding) Archival document copied around 1560 concerning the general organisation of the Council of Luxembourg, the text of which was issued in Brussels on 11 September 1532 by the Governor-General Mary of Hungary (1505–1558): Ordinances, statutes, styles and procedures for the Provincial Council of Luxembourg. As part of the reforms initiated by Charles V, the Princely Council of Luxembourg took the name of Provincial Council or Council in 1531 and sat in Luxembourg. In addition to the governor, the Council comprised the president, a jurisconsult, three councillors in long robes (jurisconsults), three councillors in short robes (nobles), a Attorney General, a secretary-clerk and a number of junior officials. As regards its powers, the Council served both as a governing body and as a court of law. Its powers extended to three areas, and its primary task was to safeguard the prince’s rights. Bound at the head: Ordinances, statutes, style, and manner of proceeding enacted and decreed by the King, our Lord, for His Majesty’s Grand Council on the 8th day of August 1559, subsequently published at the said Grand Council in open consistory, on the 19th and 20th days of December in the same year LIX.
