DAUDET (Léon). [Manuscript]. Two Bloodthirsty Idols: The Revolution and its Son Bonaparte. No place, no date (1939). Folio-sized manuscript in loose sheets, 35 lines per page, on fine paper, comprising 1 title page and 122 folios. Autograph manuscript in loose sheets signed Léon Daudet. ‘Now it is my turn to show that, in accordance with Clemenceau’s words, the Revolution is a bloc… a bloc of stupidity, muck and blood. Its most virulent form was the Reign of Terror. Its milder form is today’s democracy, with its parliamentary system and universal suffrage, and the choice, as a national holiday, of that vile 14th of July, when, with the lie of the Bastille, the parade of heads on pikes began. 14 July, the true beginning of the period of terror, compounded by the Great Fear. A fateful date for the country. ’ In 1939, on the 150th anniversary of the storming of the Bastille, Léon Daudet opposed the official interpretation of the Revolution: for him, the Reign of Terror began as early as 14 July 1789. In *Deux idoles sanguinaires*, he thus continued his anti-republican and anti-parliamentary struggle.
