DUPLESSIS-MORNAY (Philippe de). Memoirs of Sir Philippe de Mornay, Lord of Du Plessis Marli, Baron of La Forest-sur-Seure, &c. (...). Containing various speeches, instructions, letters, and dispatches, drawn up by him or written to kings, queens, princes, princesses, lords, and many eminent figures of Christendom, from the year 1572 to the year 1589. Also including some letters addressed to the aforementioned Sieur Du Plessis. Sl [La Forêt-sur-Sèvre] [later:] Amsterdam, [Jean Daillé], later: Jean Bureau [II], later: Louis Elzévir [III], 1624–1652. 4 substantial vols. in-4, marbled fawn calfskin, ribbed spine decorated with gilded arms (two lions passant), title and volume number labels, red edges (18th-century binding). One upper joint split, joint of volume IV split, some pages scorched. First edition of the finest edition of the papers of Philippe Duplessis-Mornay, published from the manuscripts held at the Sorbonne Library. Bringing together treatises, speeches, correspondence and diplomatic instructions annotated under his supervision, it remains, by virtue of the quality of its text and the selection of documents, far superior to the unfinished edition by La Fontenelle de Vaudoré (1824). A fine copy from the library of the two SAINTE-MARTHE brothers (Louis and Scévole), with a handwritten bookplate on the title pages of the first two volumes. As Scévole died in 1650, he was unable to see the continuation published by Louis Elzévir almost 25 years after the second volume appeared. Next: a copy from the library at the Château de Saint-Eusoge (in the commune of Rogny-les-Sept-Écluses in the Yonne) that belonged to the Harcourt family, with a heraldic ex-libris vignette pasted onto the front endpapers.
