[ESTIENNE (Henri)]. A marvellous account of the life, deeds and conduct of Catherine de’ Medici, Queen Mother; setting out all the means she employed to usurp the government of the Kingdom of France and ruin its state. S.l., according to the copy printed in Paris, 1650. In-12, 201 pp., ivory vellum (contemporary binding). Creased vellum. Some soiling. "A highly scathing pamphlet, written during the regency of 1574, against Catherine’s tyranny and vices. It is a sort of history of the Wars of Religion in which all blame is laid at the queen’s door. The author, who presents himself as a moderate Catholic, appears to be a Huguenot associated with the Politiques faction”. (Hauser). The authorship of the text is much debated. Estienne, de Bèze, Pithou, de Serres, Innocent Gentillet, Hotman and even R. de la Planche have all been cited as possible authors. This text, first published in 1575, was reprinted several times.
