Description
FLAVIUS JOSEPH. The History of the Jews, written by Flavius Joseph under the title *Antiquities of the Jews*. Translated from the original Greek, revised on the basis of various manuscripts by Monsieur Arnauld d’Andilly. [followed by] The History of the Jewish War against the Romans, A Reply to Appion, The Martyrdom of the Maccabees, together with Philo’s account of his Embassy to Emperor Gaius Caligula. Paris, Pierre Le Petit, 1667–1668. 2 vols. folio, brown calfskin, decorated ribbed spine (contemporary binding). Bindings worn, caps and corners damaged, joints split, scuffed and with skin wear. Fine cut (old provenance mark removed) at the top of the title pages. The illustrations consist of a title vignette (different in each volume), a separate plate, 6 engraved figures within the text, and 31 beautiful headbands, 31 initials and 21 tailpieces, and a fold-out map (in two parts) bound at the end of the second volume (re-covered in cloth at a later date). Small annotations in ink (handwriting exercises) on p. 360 of Volume II. A few small foxing spots, slight water stains and minor soiling in places.
