GAUTHIER DE BRÉCY (Charles-Edme, Viscount). True and Candid Memoirs of the Private, Moral and Political Life of a Man of Integrity, written by himself in his 81st year, Viscount Gauthier de Brécy. Paris, Guiraudet, 1834. In-8, (4)-476 pp., blue half-basane, plain spine with decoration (contemporary binding). First edition printed in a run of 200 copies, according to the notice opposite the title page. Memoirs of Viscount Gauthier de Brécy (1753–1836), covering the Revolution, the Empire and the Restoration: having lived in Paris during the Reign of Terror, he was appointed Director of Customs in Toulon at the end of 1793, where he proved hostile to the Convention and left the city with the British. He returned to France during the Consulate. As Inspector-General in Lyon in 1814, he enthusiastically rallied to the Restoration and was appointed Reader to the King.
