Description
[GUERIN (Eugène-Louis)]. Madame de Parabère. Chroniques du Palais-Royal. Paris, Charles Lachapelle, 1835. 2 volumes in-8, light-coloured half-basane with corner pieces, spine with decorated faux-nerves, title and volume number labels in navy blue, lemon-coloured edges (contemporary binding). Spine slightly sun-faded, but a fine copy. The only edition of this historical novel centred on the romantic figure of Marie-Madeleine de Parabère (1693–1755), daughter of René-François de La Vieuville, and best known for having been the most beloved mistress of the Regent of Orléans. The story is set in 1723, following the collapse of the ‘system’ (and, incidentally, Law features amongst the characters). Eugène-Louis Guérin (1807–1848) produced, throughout his brief literary career, a large number of works of fiction set in the 18th century. This copy, featuring a two-coloured (azure and pink) strip glued to the lower part of the spine, is said to have belonged to the Duchess of Berry’s second library, that at Brunnsee Castle, which she purchased in 1838 and where she spent her final days on 16 April 1870.
